U16 netball team has plenty to shout about!

The girls in the U16 netball team at Cornwallis played two cracking matches against Invicta Grammar School and Wrotham School on Thursday 25 September and won both. Here’s the low-down on how they performed in each match:

Cornwallis v Invicta Grammar

This was a match the girls were not looking forward to because they had lost all previous fixtures. Cornwallis started off strongly and went into a 4 goal lead, with some excellent shooting from Natasha Holgate and Torsi Murrell. They continued to play well and were leading 10-5 at half time. Invicta made some changes and started the second half strongly and the scores were level for a time. However, our girls managed to regain composure towards the end, with some great defending by Amy Massey, who linked up well with Jenny Eldridge in the centre court and eventually Cornwallis won 17-14.

Cornwallis v Wrotham

Played straight after the Invicta match, the Cornwallis girls started off strongly again and were leading 16- 2 at half time, with some excellent play from Jess Hawkes and the shooters. Wrotham found it difficult even to get the ball down to their shooting circle. Some of Cornwallis’ stronger players were rested for the second half and the team won by 18-3.

Team: Amy Massey, Anna Davies, Jenny Eldridge, Torsi Murrell, Natasha Holgate, Jess Hawkes, Giorgia Woods, Natasha Underdown and Paige Lazell.

MP gives students an insight into the world of politics

Students studying Government & Politics, General Studies and Public Services were fortunate enough to be given a lecture by The Rt. Hon. Ann Widdecombe MP.

Miss Widdecombe was able to give pupils a first-hand account of life as a Member of Parliament, how the government operates and the political arena as a whole.

Talking openly about her experiences, she encouraged students to ask questions, spoke frankly and in her usual style, got straight to the point!

Teacher Sian Adams commented: “She came across as someone who thought they could make a difference in people’s lives and was a passionate and thoroughly engaging speaker. She also encouraged students to work hard in their education and future career paths. Now the group are looking forward to their trip to the Houses of Parliament on 24 September where we will hopefully bump into Miss Widdecombe again.”

Miss Widdecombe MP has been a Member of Parliament for 21 years, first for Maidstone and latterly for Maidstone and the Weald.
