Tomorrow's Future Today

Let's Grow!

Students at NLL Academy are busy collecting Morrisons Let’s Grow reward vouchers from their local store so they can redeem them for free gardening equipment.

One voucher is given for every £10 spent at Morrisons between 15 September and 6 November. When enough vouchers have been collected the academy can redeem them for items such as seeds, spades, composting bins and planters.

So please, please collect as many vouchers as you can so NLL Academy becomes a ‘green’ haven for everyone to enjoy.

Students on trip of a lifetime to China

A group of eight students from New Line Learning Academy in Maidstone are jetting off to China to learn more about its history, culture and language.

The youngsters aged 13 – 16 leave Heathrow on 22 October and will spend 10 days in Beijing and the Shandong province.

The trip is being part funded by the British Council and if successful, further visits will be arranged year on year so experiences can be shared with NLL pupils back home.

Vice Principal at NLL Academy, Sandra Carter, said: “Our students are joining a number of schools from across the UK and will be accommodated in host schools. They will visit major places of interest in Beijing, will link up with Chinese students and have lessons in Chinese painting/calligraphy, media, sport and Mandarin. This is a language already taught at NLL as China is fast becoming the most thriving economically developed country in the world.”

Visit to London for ‘Ready For Work’ winners

Winners of the NLL ‘Ready For Work’ Week were George Brown and Nadia Afzal who were treated to a fantastic day out in London.

Before setting off on their journey, they were both given a haircut courtesy of the Beauty Closet and High Street vouchers to spend on clothes so they really looked smart.

On their excursion George and Nadia saw Trafalgar Square, the National Gallery before a tour of Price Waterhouse Coopers.

Teacher, Janine McCarthy, who accompanied the pupils said: “It was a brilliant day for all of us and George’s words were mainly ‘cor’ throughout.”

Other students who scooped awards for their hard work during the week were: Callum Vickary, George King, Casey Sherman, Marsal Sadighi, Ella Harvey, George King, Cane Maclean, Shaun Boelitz, Liam Waller and Matt Palmer.

The only way is up for NLL Academy!

Staff and pupils of New Line Learning Academy are on a real high after an outstanding first set of combined GCSE results.

Head of NLL Academy, Guy Hewett, was delighted when the results came in saying: “If I combined last year’s Senacre and Oldborough figures, the figure for 5 + A*- C grades would have been 27.6%. This year 43% of students have achieved 5 or more A*- C grades, with some results still to come.  Not only have we broken all previous records for either school, we’ve also shown that together the two schools are greater than they ever were apart.  The future looks bright, and we will be targeting an even higher jump next year.  I’m so proud of my students”.

Particular successes were Arun Chetri, Louis Cleggett, Natalie Ironmonger, Joel Moore and James Richards who all achieved 15 or more GCSE grades at C or above.  Alex Vece with 7As, 5Bs and 2Cs was the star of the show in terms of grades.

Five subjects at NLL (Art, Business, Early Years, Travel & Tourism and Vocational Science) all gained 100% pass rates.

Crowds turn out for school’s farewell party

More than 600 former pupils of Senacre Technology College in Maidstone turned out to a farewell party on Friday night (11 July) to mark the school’s closure.

The party, organised by ex-students Sharon Reynolds, Janet Spicer and Carol Hunt, saw teachers, staff and pupils from years gone by taking a trip down memory lane.

In the main hall there was a host of memorabilia on display including old photographs, log books and school journals for all to see.

There was also a buffet provided by the school’s catering team and disco which had everyone on the dance floor until 11pm.

The successful evening clearly highlighted the immense affection felt by those who attended Senacre over decades and enabled many guests to rekindle old friendships.

Head teacher of New Line Academy, Guy Hewett, who taught at Senacre for 16 years said: “The phrase ‘feel the love’ is over-used, but entirely appropriate regarding the reunion and farewell party staged at Senacre. Guests included one teacher who started in 1957 when the school opened, and past students from throughout the years. Although the building may be going, the heart and spirit that made Senacre special will be alive and well at New Line Learning Academy.”

Pupils from Senacre have now merged onto one site at Boughton Lane in Loose where New Line Learning Academy operates from.

The Academy provides a thriving atmosphere for it 960 pupils and by 2010 state-of-the art buildings will replace those currently there.

Money from the sale of Senacre will go towards funding the new buildings, while a housing development is set to replace the former school site on Sutton Road.
